Percent and Scaling

Lesson 19

Math

Unit 5

7th Grade

Lesson 19 of 19

Objective

Create a scale floor plan (optional).

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 7.G.A.1 — Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
  • 7.RP.A.3 — Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error.

Foundational Standards

  • 7.RP.A.2

Criteria for Success

  1. Sketch a floor plan to represent a real-life space.
  2. Use actual measurements to determine an appropriate scale and draw scale images in a floor plan.
  3. Use scale drawings and appropriate tools to model real-world spaces (MP.4 and MP.5).

Tips for Teachers

  • This is an optional lesson where students can create their own scale floor plan for a classroom or a garden, depending on which activity is chosen. Three different options are included in the Problem Set Guidance; select one option to use with the class. For guidance in implementing the lesson, refer to the source of the activity. These activities will likely take up the whole class period; as a result, there is no additional Problem Set.

Lesson Materials

  • Graph Paper (2-3 sheets per student)
  • Ruler (1 per student)
  • Blank Paper (2-3 sheets per student)

Target Task

5-10 minutes

Jin has a small backyard. He wants to add a few things to his backyard to use during the summer. The items and their dimensions are shown below.

  • Picnic table: $$96$$in × $$60$$in
  • Garden area: $$4$$ft × $$10\frac{1}{2}$$ft
  • Play house: $$36$$in × $$48$$in

A scale drawing of Jin’s backyard is shown below. In the space below, draw one possible way that Jin could place the items in his backyard.

Additional Practice

The following resources include problems and activities aligned to the objective of the lesson that can be used for additional practice or to create your own problem set.

Choose one of the options below. (As noted in the Tips for Teachers, these activities are designed to take up the whole class period and therefore there is no additional Problem Set.)

  • MARS Formative Assessment Lessons for Grade 7 Drawing to Scale: A GardenOption 3: In this activity, students design a garden for a client. Note that this includes some geometry concepts that students may need additional support with, such as circles and volume.
  • Open Up Resources Grade 7 Unit 1 Lesson 13Option 2: In this activity, students create a scale drawing of their own classroom.
  • EngageNY Mathematics Grade 7 Mathematics > Module 1 > Topic D > Lesson 20Option 1: In this activity, students create scale drawings of their dream classroom.
