Percent and Scaling

Lesson 15

Math

Unit 5

7th Grade

Lesson 15 of 19

Objective

Use scales in maps to find actual distances between locations.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 7.G.A.1 — Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
  • 7.RP.A.3 — Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error.

Foundational Standards

  • 7.RP.A.2

Criteria for Success

  1. Interpret a map scale in a map and understand how the scale changes as you zoom in and out.
  2. Understand how to use a scale in a map.
  3. Use a ruler to determine a ratio for a map scale, and use it to find actual distances on the map (MP.5).

Tips for Teachers

Lesson Materials

On the map below, $${{1\over4}}$$ inch represents one mile. Candler, Canton, and Oteen are three cities on the map.

a.   If the distance between the real towns of Candler and Canton is 9 miles, how far apart are Candler and Canton on the map?

b.   If Candler and Oteen are $${3 {1\over2}}$$ inches apart on the map, what is the actual distance between Candler and Oteen in miles?
