Draw polygons in the coordinate plane and find area and perimeter (Part 2).

  • 6.G.A.3 — Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Criteria for Success


  1. Plot coordinate points in the coordinate plane in order to create polygons. 
  2. Determine the length of horizontal or vertical line segments between two coordinate points on and off the coordinate plane. 
  3. Find area and perimeter of rectilinear and non-rectilinear polygons in the coordinate plane.

Tips for Teachers


  • In Lessons 7 and 8, students draw polygons in the coordinate plane and solve problems about them. In Lesson 8, students look at figures with diagonal lines. 
  • Students draw on their understanding from Unit 4 to recall how absolute value can be used to determine lengths of horizontal and vertical line segments in the coordinate plane.
  • Note: when finding perimeter of polygons with diagonal lines, the length of the diagonals will be provided. Students will find the length of diagonal lines in the coordinate plane in Grade 8 using the Pythagorean Theorem.

Problem 1

 A polygon has vertices at $${(-5, 1)}$$, $${(-1, 3)}$$, $${(2, 3)}$$, $${(5, 1)}$$, $${(5, -2)}$$, $${(2, -4)}$$, $${(-4, -4)}$$, and $${(-5, -2)}$$

a.   Draw the polygon in the coordinate plane below and label the vertices to name the shape.

b.   Describe two different strategies to find the area of the polygon. Then choose one and find the area.

Problem 2

An isosceles trapezoid, $${EFGH}$$, has vertices indicated below.

$${E(-6,5)}$$     $${F(-4,5)}$$     $${G(-2,3)}$$     $${H(-8,3)}$$

The length of line segment $${EH}$$ is $${2.83}$$ units. Find the area and perimeter of the trapezoid. A coordinate plane is provided below if needed.
