Lesson 7

Math

Unit 7

6th Grade

Lesson 7 of 17

Objective

Draw polygons in the coordinate plane and find area and perimeter (Part 1).

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 6.G.A.3 — Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Foundational Standards

  • 6.NS.C.6

Criteria for Success

  1. Plot coordinate points in the coordinate plane in order to create polygons.
  2. Determine the length of horizontal or vertical line segments between two coordinate points on and off the coordinate plane.
  3. Find area and perimeter of rectilinear polygons in the coordinate plane.

Tips for Teachers

  • In Lessons 7 and 8, students draw polygons in the coordinate plane and solve problems about them. In Lesson 7, students focus on rectilinear shapes with right angles. In Lesson 8, students will look at figures with diagonal lines.
  • Students draw on their understanding from Unit 4 to recall how absolute value can be used to determine lengths of horizontal and vertical line segments in the coordinate plane.

Problem 1

A rectangle has three vertices at points $${A(4, 5)}$$, $${B(4, -3)}$$, and $${C(-5, -3)}$$.

a.   What are the coordinates of the fourth vertex, $$D$$, of the rectangle? If needed, use the coordinate plane above.

b.   What is the area of the rectangle?

Problem 2

A rectangle has vertices located in the first and fourth quadrant of a coordinate plane. Two of the vertices are located at $${(2, 1)}$$ and $${(5, 1)}$$. If the perimeter of the rectangle is $${20}$$ units and the area of the rectangle is $${21}$$ square units, then what are the coordinates of the other two vertices?

Target Task

5-10 minutes

Square $${ ABCD}$$ is located in the first and fourth quadrant of the coordinate plane. Vertex $$A$$ is located at the point $${(1,4)}$$ and vertex $$C$$ is located at the point $${(6, -1)}$$. A coordinate plane is provided below if you need it.

a.   Which of the coordinate points below could represent one of the other vertices of the square? Select all that apply.

  1. a.   $$(−1,1)$$

  2. b.   $$(1,−1)$$

  3. c.   $$(1,6)$$

  4. d.   $$(4,−1)$$

  5. e.   $$(4,6)$$

  6. f.   $$(6,4)$$

b.   What is the perimeter of square $$ABCD$$?
