Unit 2: Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers

Unit 2 focuses on multiplying and dividing multi-digit whole numbers. Thus, this unit’s word problems focus on one-step word problems involving multiplication and division, as well as two- and multi-step problems involving all four operations. Later in the year, students will extend their understanding of how to deal with a remainder to both compute a mixed number answer as well as to represent it as a decimal. Thus, many of the division problems they’ll encounter in this unit involving interpreting a remainder as explored in 4th grade, such as discarding it or the remainder forcing the answer to the next whole number.

Unit 7: Patterns and the Coordinate Plane

In Unit 7, students explore the coordinate plane. The sequence for this unit starts with those that involve unit conversion, a topic that fell towards the end of Unit 6. Then, towards the end of the unit students will explore a few word problems related to information presented on a coordinate plane, nicely capping off the year and looking ahead to courses where the coordinate plane will play an important role in students’ developing understanding of algebraic ideas.

  1. How much does a typical calf weigh when it is born?
  2. At what age does a typical calf weigh 300 pounds?
  3. How much weight does a typical calf gain between months 4 and 8 of its life? How do you know?

  5. During which months does a typical calf gain weight the fastest? The slowest? How do you know?

Answer:

  1. 75 pounds
  2. 6 months
  3. 150 pounds
  4. At 12 months a typical calf weighs 450 pounds.
  5. Between months 0 and 8 a typical calf gains weight fastest. Between months 10 and 18 a typical calf gains weight the slowest. I can tell this from the slopes of the lines, the fastest time has the steepest slope and the slowest time has the least steep slope.

Lesson 14

Elise and Jun-Ho are drawing on the sidewalk in chalk. In the sidewalk blocks, they each write a pattern that is 10 numbers long.

Elise puts 0 in her first block and wants to add 2 every time to get the next number.

Jun-Ho puts 0 in his first block and wants to add 10 every time to get the next number.

Here is what the sidewalk blocks look like:

Elise:

0 2

Jun-Ho:

0 10
  1. Complete each sidewalk pattern.
  2. How many times as much is Jun-Ho's number in the 4th block than Elise's number in the 5th block? What about the numbers in the 7th block? The 10th block?
  3. What pattern do you notice in your answers for Part (b)? Why do you think that pattern exists?
  4. If Elise and Jun-Ho kept their sidewalk patterns going, what number will be in Elise’s block when Jun-Ho’s corresponding block shows 190?

Answer:

  1. Elise:
0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18

Jun-Ho:

0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90
  1. Jun-Ho's number in the 4th block is 5 times as much as Elise's number. The same is true of the numbers in the 7th block and the 10th block.
  2. I notice that Jun-Ho's numbers are always 5 times as much as Elise's numbers. I think this pattern exists because Elise started at 0 and is counting by 2s but Jun-Ho started at 0 and is counting by 10, so Jun-Ho is always counting by fives times as much.
  3. When Jun-Ho's number is 190, Elise's number will be 38.
