Shapes and Volume

Lesson 2

Math

Unit 3

5th Grade

Lesson 2 of 16

Objective

Find the volume of pictorial three-dimensional figures.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 5.MD.C.4 — Measure volumes by counting unit cubes, using cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft, and improvised units.

Foundational Standards

  • 3.MD.C.5
  • 3.MD.C.6

Criteria for Success

  1. Find the volume of pictorial representations of unconventional three-dimensional shapes by counting unit cubes.
  2. Find the volume of pictorial representations of rectangular prisms by counting unit cubes.
  3. Understand that a rectangular prism is a three-dimensional shape that has rectangular sides.

Tips for Teachers

Lesson Materials

  • Centimeter cubes (30 per pair of students)
  • Build My Prism Template (1 per pair of students) — This material should be cut along the dotted line before the lesson.

Problem 3

(Teachers: Pair up students and give image A below to one in each pair and image B below to the other partner cut out from Build My Prism Template.)

Partner A’s prism Partner B’s prism

a.   The goal of the game is to get your partner to build a prism that matches the picture of your given prism.

  • Partner A: Look at the image of the prism provided to you. Describe it to your partner.
  • Partner B: Build the prism your partner describes to you.

b.   Place the two prisms next to each other and discuss what is the same and what is different about them.

Problem Set

15-20 minutes

Discussion of Problem Set

  • In #2, how did you find its volume? If someone got a volume of 23 cubic units, what mistake do you think they made?
  • In #3, compare your answers for Figures C and D. What patterns do you notice?
  • How did you decide to draw a figure with a volume of 7 cubic units in #4? Is there more than one way to draw a figure with the same volume?
  • What was Joyce’s mistake in #4? What do you need to think about when counting cubic units in drawings? How is it different from counting them in person? Is it possible for a drawing to fool you? Might some cubes be hidden, or might there be gaps that you cannot see?

Target Task

5-10 minutes

What is the volume, in cubic units, of each of the figures below?

a.

b.
