Key Questions

  • p. 169: We have learned so far that Percy is motivated by his love of his mother, and Grover is motivated by his desire to attain a searcher’s license. But what motivates Annabeth to go on this dangerous quest? What details support your answer?
  • pp. 171–173: What does the description of the setting reveal about the Aunty Em’s Garden Gnome Emporium?
  • Did you figure out Aunty Em’s true identity before Percy? What clues does the author leave for the reader in Chapter 11?
  • Why do you think Percy sends Medusa’s head to Mount Olympus? Do you think this is a good idea? What does this reveal about his character?

Questions for Myth: "The Story of Medusa and Athena":

  • Many Greek myths warn about the danger of hubris. Describe how Medusa’s “hubris” ultimately destroys her. Make sure to use details from the text.

Notes

  • This lesson connects to a unit test and essential question.
  • Optional Writing Prompt: Medusa’s obituary. Study some obituaries from your local newspaper, then write an obituary for Medusa. Make it funny if you wish. Be sure to use facts about her life (from the myths) and her death (from The Lightning Thief). What will her funeral arrangements be? Where should people send flowers or charitable donations? If your dress code allows, encourage students to wear black armbands for mourning!
